Am I Allowed to Talk about Past Sins to People Who Already Know?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I know we should not reveal our sins to people, but if my friends already know about them, then am I able to talk about them in general-not boasting-even after I repent from them?

Answer

One should never share or talk about one’s past sins. One can say I have committed wrongs in the past, from which I have repented if need be. Sins are like a staircase; one goes up with repentance and looks back down with lowliness and humility.

I advise you to keep your sins to yourself, repent them, and move forward into a new fresh life.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “All the children of Adam are sinful, and the best of sinners are those who repent.” [Tirmidhi; Ahmad]
