Can I Go To Work Trip or Christmas Party?

Question

Assalamu ‘Alaykum.

At my workplace, they have a Christmas party or a winter team event, where they go to a restaurant and bowling center. They also have a second event at an amusement park, calling it a “pre-Christmas evening”. As a brand new worker, I’ve been invited to both these events. Is it permissible to go to both these events?

Answer

Wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

I pray you are well.

It is permissible to attend social events organized by your workplace. They are a good opportunity to socialize, build bonds, and show one’s embodiment of the character of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). This is if the events are free of indecent dress and behavior, as a trip to a theme park is likely to be.

If you are going to a bowling alley or a restaurant, you should request that they go to a place where alcohol is not served or allowed on the premises. Make it clear that you’ll feel uncomfortable around it due to your beliefs; they may be accommodating.

As for actual Christmas parties, with the alcohol, mistletoe, and indecent behavior, politely excuse yourself from attending and don’t go. You won’t gain anything positive from being there. Besides, there are many instances of people getting their drinks spiked in such events by people who see doing this as a bit of fun.

It’s better to leave an impression of being a reserved, kind, polite, and trustworthy person who doesn’t engage in anything that compromises his beliefs than to be the social butterfly who lets peer pressure drag him into acts and places he knows won’t help him on the Day of Judgement.

Allah has cursed practically every activity to do with wine – from buying it to carrying it to someone to drink. (Abu Dawud) Being around people drinking won’t do your religious practice any favors. Many have slipped and had the odd sip then became a lifestyle later – just to fit in. Protect your din. It’s the safest way.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.
