Question:
As-salamu Alaykum.
According to the Hanafi madhab, what is the ruling on tawassul through the Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace)? Also, more specifically, is following the supplication detailed in the hadith of the blind man permissible?
Answer:
Wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.
I pray you are well.
Tawassul Through the Prophet is Permissible
Yes, it is permissible, according to the Hanafi’s, to perform tawassul through the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). (Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al Muhtar) Not only the Hanafis, but the other schools of fiqh allow it. (al Mawsu’a al Kuwaitiyya)
There are some scholars of the umma who have deemed it impermissible, however. Still, given their minority and the fact that so many credible scholars from across the schools have held it permissible, it is best not to get into any arguments about it with anyone.
Focus on the Beneficial
You may perform tawassul without worry. If anyone does not accept it, leave the matter with them and do not waste your time in argumentation. Focus on what will make you closer to Allah. Please refer to this answer for more details.
