Qunut in witr prayer

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf Mangera

Is the dua e qunut mandatory in the witr prayer? How is the qunut to be done during the witr (could you explain it step by step as I didn’t understand it so far)? Do you know a short and easy dua to recite during the qunut transliterated in English?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

In the name of Allah the Inspirer of truth.

In the third rak’ah after reciting the additional surah or verses following the fatihah, raise your hands to your ears saying Allahu akbar and tie them again below the navel as normal. It is then necessary [wajib] to make qunut, hence, recite the following:

Qunût To Be Recited In The Witr Salâh.

O Allâh, I seek help from You, ask forgiveness from You, and believe in You and praise You for all the good things and are grateful to You and we part and break off with all those who disobedient to You. O Allâh, You alone do we worship and pray exclusively to You and bow before You alone and we hasten eagerly towards You and fear Your severe punishment and hope for Your mercy, for Your severe punishment is surely to be meted out to the disbelievers.

Until you are able to memorize the above du’a which is the sunna du’a to be recited for the qunut in witr, recite:

“Allahummaghfirli” [O Allah, forgive me] or

“Allahummahdini” [O Allah, guide me] thrice

(or any such du’a that cannot be asked of humans). (Radd al-Muhtar 1:447).

Wassalam

Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf
