i read once in a book return by mulla Ali Qari rahimahullah that wearing gloves for women in the hanafi madhdhab is wajib. but some scholars i have spoken to have not mentioned this to me when mentioning the wajibat of ihram for women. can you clarify the correct position for me.

Assalamu alaykum
Some scholars of the Hanafi school felt that a woman was indeed obliged to cover the outer part of her hand and was only allowed to disply the inner part of her hand. This is transmitted from the early Hanafi school. Many of the later, imams of the school deemed it permissible to display the whole hand, and these include Ibrahim al-Halabi, who supports it strongly with a number of evidences (al-Halabi al-Kabir, 211, Dar Sa’ada), Qadikhan, al-Shurunbulali, ibn Amir Haj, and others (Radd al-Muhtar, 1:271, Bulaq).
A woman is therefore not obliged to wear gloves while in a state of ihram, but may do so if she wishes, according to the Hanafi school (Irshad al-Sari, 78, Matba’a Mustafa Muhammad). In fact wearing gloves while in a state of ihram is actually not permissible in the Shafi’i, Hanbali, and Maliki schools (Hidaya al-Salik ila al-Madhahib al-Arba’a fi l-Manasik, 580, Dar al-Basha’ir al-Islamiyya), and so it may well be deemed most precautionary to not wear gloves while in a state of ihram. And Allah knows best.
