Reciting Qur’an During Times When it is Prohibited to Make Salah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I would like to know whether there’s any restriction / prohibition on reciting the Qur’an al-Karim (from memory or mushaf) during the prohibited times of salah, i.e. sunrise, zawal (noon), sunset. My mother for some reason holds the view that one shouldn’t recite at these times.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate Assalamu alaikum,

It is not disliked to recite the Qur’an during the times it is interdicted to pray.

However, some scholars have mentioned that it is superior to spend these times in supplication, and dhikr than in reciting the Qur’an. [Tahtawi, Hashiyat Maraqi al-Falah, 1.261; Ibn Nujaym, al-Bahr al-Ra’iq 1.264]

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
