Reciting Qur’an During Times When It is Prohibited to Pray

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question: I would like to know whether there is any restriction or prohibition on reciting the Qur’an Al-Karim (from memory or written text [mushaf]) during the prohibited times of prayer, i.e. sunrise, noon (zawal), and sunset. My mother, for some reason, holds the view that one shouldn’t recite at these times.

Answer: In the name of Allah, Most Merciful.

Assalamu alaikum,

It is not disliked to recite the Qur’an during the times it is interdicted to pray; however, some scholars have mentioned that it is superior to spend these times in supplication and remembrance of God (dhikr) than in reciting the Qur’an [Tahtawi, Hashiyat Maraqi al-Falah, 1.261; Ibn Nujaym, al-Bahr al-Ra’iq 1.264].

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
