Is Suhur a condition for fasting to be valid when you are making up fasts?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Does one have to wake up and eat at Suhur for a fast to be valid when making up fasts? I know to wake up for suhur is Sunnah and there is a greatness attched to this great act and to make up the missed fast is fardh. So I’ve been keeping them without eating at Suhur.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

The pre-dawn meal (suhur) is a recommended sunna, and a means of great blessing–as well as being a means of facilitating one’s fast. [ Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah ] However, it is not a condition for the validity of one’s fast. As such, one can perform any kind of fast even if one missed the pre-dawn meal.

And Allah alone gives success.

Faraz Rabbani
