Dhikr after the Sunna

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I would like to know what the position of the Hanafi school is regarding (individual) zhikr after the fard prayers when there are sunnah prayers still to be prayed. Should one pray the sunnah’s first before doing zhikr or should it be zhikr first?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

In the Hanafi school it is best to pray one’s sunnah right after one’s fard prayers, and to do one’s dhikrs after the sunna prayer. Unnecessary worldly talk or activities between the fard and sunna reduce the reward of one’s sunna prayer. [Shurunbulali, Ibn Abidin]

For several wisdoms, however, some scholars preferred the position of doing one’s post-salat dhikrs before the sunnahs.

Is there a difference of opinion regarding this i) amongst Hanafis ii) with other madhabs?

Yes.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
