Reading silent prayers aloud

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Salaam, I never learned that Zuhr, Asr, the last rakat of 3 fard in Maghrib, and the last 2 rakats in 4 fard isha are supposed to be silent. Instead I recited all my salats in a low voice. Will I have to make up all my salats where I should have been silent? (In all these instances I prayed alone, not in group settings) If I do have to repeat the salats, would the same rules apply to sunnah and witr rakats, as I was not silent in any of their recitation as well?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

Reciting quietly in the quiet prayers is necessary (wajib). Past prayers in which necessary (wajib) actions have been omitted are valid and don’t have to be repeated. ( Tahtawi/Shurunbulali, Hashiyat Maraqi al-Falah )

Please search for related answers in the SunniPath Answers (qa.SunniPath.com) on missing necessary (wajib) actions in prayer.

However, reciting in a “low voice” would not go against “reciting quietly.” What vitiates it is “reciting out loud” — such that others in the room would clearly hear you reciting out loud. ( Tahtawi/Shurunbulali, Hashiyat Maraqi al-Falah )

And Allah alone gives success.

Faraz Rabbani
