Accepting money for teaching the Quran

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Is it permissible to accept money for teaching the Qur’an? Is it permissible (or even preferable) for a teacher to accept the money and donate it to charity if the student/school insists on paying the teacher?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

There is absolutely nothing wrong with accepting payment for teaching the Qur’an or any Shariah sciences. It is permitted according to the vast majority of the later scholars of all four Sunni schools of fiqh. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Nawawi, Majmu`, Ibn Qudama, al-Mughni]

Such money is lawful, and there is no dubiousness (shubha) in it. As such, it would not be expected that one give it away in charity, though one may do so if one wishes to.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
