How does one start the second rakat?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I have to ask that, lets say if you have to pray 4 rakahs of Asr, in the first rakah, you begin with subhana kala huma wa bi hamdika wata bara kasmuka…….. and after that you say, aadu billah hi mini shaytan…. and then bismillah, so for the second rakah, do you have to say audhu billah and bismillah both or nothing? Since you already said in the beginning , should it be repeated? Someone told me you just say bismillah ….. in the second , third , and four rakat, (taking example of Asr). What is the right way?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

In the second rakat, you only begin with bismillah (if you are leading or praying alone).

The opening supplication, and seeking of refuge are both only sunnas for the first rakat. [Nur al-Idah, Tanwir]
