I am a recent convert and so far have only memorized the Fatiha and a few suras in Arabic. Which parts of the prayer should I memorize in Arabic next?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

It is important for a person to recite all the prayers of salat in Arabic. This is something every mature Muslim should make effort to attain. The way to prioritize this is to first learn the obligatory (fard) portions, then the necessary (wajib) prayers, then the sunna as follows:

1. The fard—recitation of the Qur’an, memorizing the Fatiha and a few suras (which you have already accomplished).

2. The wajib—tashahhud (which includes the testification) for the sitting posture, a short du’a like Allahum ‘ghfir li for the qunut in witr.

3. The sunna—salawat Ibrahimiyya, the tasbihs of ruku’ and sujud, the final du’a, the thana’ or beginning praise, the complete du’a of qunut for the witr, other tasbeehs, etc.

Reciting the du’as in another language will not invalidate the prayer according to Imam Abu Hanifa. However, continuing to do so without a concerted attempt to memorize the Arabic, or doing so while having memorized the Arabic, would certainly be disliked, since the opinion of Imam Abu Yusuf and Muhammad is of the impermissibility of reciting du’as in other than Arabic in prayer (Radd al-muhtar 1:325, 350).

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam

Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf
