A Muslim sister died in our community with her child. I wanted to know if Women are allowed to attend her burial at all? The men in our community said it is not allowed – staying women are more “emotional” than men. I found that statement sexist and insulting. What is the Islamic understanding regarding Women participation in funerals of loved ones.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

In the name of Allah Most Merciful Most Compassionate

Woman may wash the dead, and pray over the dead but may not go to the burial at the time of the burial but are free to visit the grave anytime after the burial.
