Is writing something negative about someone in a personal diary considered backbiting?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
asalamualykum!

If something bad is written down about a person like in a personal diary is this allowed or is it still known as backbiting?

Answer
Bismillah

Al-jawab billahi at-taufeeq (the answer with Allah’s guidance)

Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said :”Do you know what backbiting is?” They said, “God and His Messenger know best.” He then said, “It is to say something about your brother that he would dislike.” Someone asked him, “But what if what I say is true?” The Messenger of God said, “If what you say about him is true, you are backbiting him, but if it is not true then you have slandered him.” (Muslim)

The tongue alone does not do backbiting; it can also be done with the eyes, hands (i.e by writing down in a diary) and other movements etc. For example, imitating somebody who is limping, in order to insult him/her.

And Only Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
