Is vasectomy allowed in cases where a wife cannot have more children and cannot be sterilized?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
Q: IS VASECTOMY HARAAM? AND WHAT IF A WIFE COULD NOT HAVE ANY MORE CHILDREN DUE TO POTENTIAL HARM TO THEIR HEALTH AND FOR THE SAME REASON CANNOT BE STERILISED, COULD CONTRACEPTION BE ALLOWED IN SUCH A CIRCUMSTANCE.

Answer
Vasectomy is prohibited. In the event where it has been confirmed by a specialist that pregnancy may cause potential harm to the mother contraception will be permitted. This can be in the form of condoms, pills or other such methods which temporarily renders the woman incapable of conceiving. It is not permissible to take any permanent measures or surgical procedures as alternatives are available.

It should be noted that contraception and other such medical issues tend to be cases of necessity and as such tend to differ from person to person as a result what may apply to one group may not apply to another. It is advisable that individuals in such a circumstance should approach a trustworthy, capable and qualified Alim or Mufti who they know or know of and trust and inform them with the relevant details of their particular circumstance so that the Mufti may give an informed decision. A person should not rely upon their own judgement of what constitutes necessity. والله أعلم
