What does it mean if I keep having a dream about defecating?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
Dear Mufti Saahib

Assalaamu alaykum.

I keep having a reoccurring dream in which I am defecating. This is not a one off dream I have had this same dream a number of times. As far as I can remember sometimes I am trying to clean myself (istanja) but the part where I am defecating is reoccurring and now has me worried. If it was a one-off dream I would not have bothered you.

The only thing that come to my mind is that I have a urine problem (which is common to others as well) in that when I have finished urinating I have to squeeze and cough a number of times to make sure all the urine is out and that none of it will come out on my clothes. It is possible than on a few occasions I am a little careless but at the same time I cannot over due things and cause damage to the male organ.

I hope you can advise. JizakAllah for your time in answering my questions.

Wassalaam.

Al-jawab billahi at-taufeeq (the answer with Allah’s guidance)

It is compulsory to do Istibra’ after urinating. It is important that Istibra’ is done moderately and not excessively.

“Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you.” (2:185)

N.B. Istibra’ is to ensure that the traces of urine has come out completely. Some examples of Istibra’: one should shake, sway or squeeze the penis very gently, coughing, taking few steps, jogging, lying on the left side etc, there is no restrictions in Istibra’, one may do Istibra’ in any way one is used to.

If the urine drops comes out later then you should try placing something, for example, toilet paper or cotton in your under garment so that it absorbs any left over drops of urine.

Before making Wudhu and Salah you should remove and replace it with clean toilet paper and if your private parts have been soiled with urine then you just need to wash it.

Doubts after urinating:

If you are certain that you saw or felt some drops of urine then you need only pass water over the affected area until the trace is removed. There is no need to wash the whole garment.

If you are in doubt then you should ignore and discard your doubts. According to Usoolul Fiqh (fundamental principles of Islamic jurisprudence),”Al Yaqeen La Yazulu Bish Shak” (Certainty is not invalidated by doubt). (Al Ashbah Wan Nazair Pg. 60)

This means that you are considered clean until you are certain of the visible traces of urine. A mere feeling of something dropping is not backed up by obvious traces of urine and should be ignored completely.

Rules regarding Ma’zur:

If the urine drops continues throughout one full Salah period, then you will be regarded as a Ma’zur (excused).

You will perform ablution for the time of each obligatory prayer. And, with that Wudhu it is permissible to pray as many obligatory or optional prayers as you desire during that prayer time. However, the Wudhu will be nullified at the expiry of the prayer time.

Also, If a Ma’zur (excused person) experienced another factor (laughs aloud during the prayer or vomits etc,) besides the excuse due to which he/she is classified as a Ma’zur, then his/her Wudhu will break. (Quduri Pg.22, Nurul Idhah Pg. 51)

And Only Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
