Performing salaatut tasbeeh as kaffaarah for breaking an oath

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: If one breaks an oath, and then offers Salaatut Tasbeeh, would he still have to pay the Kaffaraah?

Bismillaah

A: Salaatut tasbeeh removes minor sins. As far as major sins are concerned, tawba is compulsory. Breaking an oath is a major sin and hence, making sincere tawba is compulsory for the sin to be forgiven. Shariah has explained that the tawba for breaking an oath is repentance as well as discharging the kaffaarah.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
