Is it okay to attend an engagement in Islam?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: My husband and I always disagree on the topic of going to someone’s engagement. I believe it is wrong because an engagement has no basis in Islam, it is not a Nikaah or anything, but my husband says it doesn’t matter if it is an engagement, it is an invitation so we have to go even if it is wrong. Is it okay to go? Where does it ever say that an engagement is ok to have and to go to?

Bismillaah

A: It is permissible to go to the house in order to confirm the proposal. However, having an engagement function for this purpose is an unfounded practice. The Sunnah is that when a match is found, then the nikaah should be performed. Delaying in performing the nikaah is against the Sunnah.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
