Wearing an engagement ring

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: If a couple get engaged, but have not yet performed the nikkah, is it permissible for the woman to wear an engagement ring in public?

Bismillaah

A: It is permissible to confirm the proposal. However, having an engagement function for this purpose is an unfounded practice. The Sunnah is that when a match is found, then the nikaah should be performed. Delaying in performing the nikaah is against the Sunnah. To put on the ring at the engagement function is a christian custom and hence should be discarded.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
