Checking to see when haidh terminates

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I have been having great difficulty figuring out when my period ends. I usually do not see a white discharge after my menses so I often have to keep checking for dryness. I read that the way to check for dryness is to insert a cotton ball or tissue and see if anything is left on it.

My question is (I’m sorry if it is a bit graphic):

1. What does it mean exactly by ‘insert’? As in right before the inner lips of the private part or actually ‘insert’ into it?

2. Do I let it wait there or remove it immediately?

3. How regularly should I do this?

I would appreciate an answer according to the Hanafi fiqh.

Bismillaah

A:

1. On the surface.

2. Both are correct.

3. As long as you have some uncertainty.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Q: Firstly, at the end of my menses, the flow of blood slows down so much that often hours pass without the reddish/brown discharge reaching outside my private part. During these times, although there is no discharge if I check the surface of my private part, I know there is some on the ‘inside’ (it will be there if I insert a piece of tissue in). Should I make ghusl during these times? As in do I consider my menses over during such intervals and ignore whatever comes afterwards?

Secondly, sometimes I insert a tissue and notice there is discharge on it, and then insert it in again right away. The second (or third) time I insert the tissue comes pack dry/clean as the first (or second) insert cleaned up whatever discharge was there. Do I consider my menses over then? Or if I see discharge the first time, should I wait a bit before repeating the check?

A: When there is no blood on the surface in the days of your menses then you need to take a bath and start off salaah.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
