Girlfriend/Boyfriend in Islam

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Why girlfriend/boyfriend is not allowed in Islam? Why we can’t show and win the affection of a girl in order to be with her? Why only arranged marriages?

Bismillaah

A: For a male to have any contact or casual relationship with a non-mahram woman is impermissible in Islam. The Hadith of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) explains that when a non-mahram boy and girl remain in seclusion, then the third one present is shaitaan. Hence, all types of premarital relationships are haraam. It has been proven that more than 80 percent of people who courted or dated before nikaah, their marriages have resulted in a failure or disaster.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
