Leaving the wife and living abroad

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I have observed in many countries that people marry and stay with their wives for a month or two and then they go to other countries for work and they come back to their wives after two or three years for a month or two and then again go back. My question is that is this the correct way of spending life with family especially wives? Is this the correct way of spending a married life according to Islam? Please answer my question to clear my concept about this issue.

Bismillaah

A: The purpose for the institution of nikaah in Islam is in order to enable the spouses to remain chaste throughout their lives and fulfil the responsibilities and obligations they owe to Allah Ta’ala, to one another and their children. Through remaining away for such long durations, one will not be able to fulfil one’s responsibilities towards one’s spouse and one’s family. Hence it is incorrect for the husband to leave his wife and children for such long periods.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
