Games & Umrah Question

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Respected Mufti Saheb
Assalamualaikum

I would appreciate it Mufti Saheb could answer the following queries:
1. Could you please mention a encompassing principle, based on which we could realize which board games are Halaal and which aren’t? Some say that those what have educational benefits e.g. scrabble, quiz games etc are ok, as they are in fact educational tools not games played as a past time. Others say tat the object of a game is to relax the mind thus games played as relaxation and not containing any evils would be permissible. Yet others I have heard saying that all games with dice are Haraam! Please clarify this.

2. On another website www.quraan.com under innovations of Hajj it says that
leaving Makkah to perform an extra Umrah is innovation. From what I
believe many people tend to leave the borders of Makkah to go to Tan’eem
to perform a second Umrah. In doing so are they committing Bid’ah as performing more than one Umrah in one trip wasn’t the practice in the time of Sahabah etc.

Please clarify this.

Jazakallahu Khairan

Answer:

  1. It will be permissible to play board games in order to ease ones stress or for

relaxation purposes provided it does not cause one to become unmindful of his/ her Shar’i duties e.g. Salaah. Playing such games should not be made a habit as it will eventually lead to addiction. (Fataawaa Mahmoodiyah, Vol. 17, Page 358.)

2.  Apart from the 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th it will be permissible to perform Umrah at any other time throughout the year. It will be Makrooh (odious) to perform Umrah in the above mentioned days.  Your question is most likely referring to the Mutamatti (one who performs Umrah and Hajj in one journey with two Ihraams) who wishes to perform a second Umrah before his Hajj. This is a controversial issue amongst the Ulamaa.

Some Ulamaa are of the opinion that the Mutamatti cannot perform a second Umrah before his Hajj. He is only allowed to perform one Umrah before Hajj.  Majority of the Ulamaa are of the opinion that the Mutamatti can perform as many Umrahs as he desires before performing his Hajj. We have given preference to the latter group of Ulamaa. (Badaai’us Sanaai’, vol. 2 page 489. Ghunyatul Manaasik, page 215. Mu’allimul Hujjaj, Page 221.)
