Is stealing electricity to reduce bills considered haram?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Jamia Binoria
Assalamu Alaikum Some people steal electricity to reduce the amount of electricity bills which come from the government for the monthly electricity consumption. That means, they do adjustments in the Electricity Meter by an electrician due to which the amount becomes less from 60% to 70%. Since I too am an electrician, when I say that this is stealing and not correct they say that the government levies taxes on everything and therefore this is permissible. What is the Shar’i ruling on this?

الجواب حامدا و مصلیا

If any meter is infect faster than the set speed and shows more units than what is utilized, then there is no harm in adjusting it to the set speed, with taking care of preserving one’s life, wealth, respect and character. Otherwise it is necessary to refer to the concerned body. However calling the government taxes as oppressive without any grounds and finding excuses to steal electricity is similar to just making oneself deceived by himself. And this is undoubtedly a theft, abstinence from which is essential.
