My father used to ‘steal electricity’ from the electricity company using… Now, can he pay them back as repentance? Can he accept a reduction in how much he has to pay back? My father is hesitant… could my brothers and I pay on his behalf?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

This is legally your father’s responsibility: he owes the electricity company the amount he cheated them for. It would be permitted for him to seek a reduction in his amount. Given the sin entailed in cheating, he would also have to sincerely repent to Allah from such an action.

If he is unwilling or unable to pay, you and your brother may do so, in order to reduce the sin borne by your father.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
