Covenant between the mentor the spiritual teacher and people

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Jamia Binoria

Dear sir i just want to know that, what is “BAIT” and what is its importance in the Islam?

الجواب حامدا و مصلیا

Bai’at infact is a covenant between the mentor the spiritual teacher (Murshid) and a student (Mureed). Murshid undertakes to teach the Mureed the way of leading the life according to the commandments of Allah Tha’ala and the Mureed undertakes to practise certainly whatever is taught by the Murshid. Bai’ath is neither Fardh nor Wajib and even without it, under the guidance of the Murshid the purpose of self-rectification could be achieved. However since Bai’ath is a Sunnath of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam and his (Sahaba) companions, and by a covenant, the feeling of responsibilities of both parties become stronger, there is ample Barakah and convenience in achieving the objective.
In short, what is necessary and compulsory is self-rectification, and not the Bai’ath however since it is a source of achieving self-rectification it is necessary to observe it.

Allah knows best.
