Reciting ten verses of Surah Baqarah to retain the Quran

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Is there a narration something to the effect that states if a person recites Surah Fatihah, Surah Baqarah till ‘Muflihun’, Ayatul Kursi and ‘Aamanar Rasoolu…’ Then one won’t forget the Quran in the morning?

If there is, can it be quoted?

Answer

Imam Darimi (rahimahullah) has recorded a similar narration as the statement of Mughirah ibn Subay’ -A student of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu)-:

“Whoever recites the following ten verses from Surah Baqarah before sleeping will never forget the Quran:

  1. The first four verses
  2. Ayatul Kursi with the two verses that follow it
  3. The last 3 verses of Surah Baqarah.”

Ishaq ibn ‘Isa, Imam Darimi’s (rahimahumallah) teacher explains, “He will not forget what he memorised.”

(Sunan Darimi, Hadith: 3650)

The narrators in this chain are all reliable. The narration is therefore suitable to quote as the statement of Mughirah ibn Subay’ (rahimahullah).

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has also recorded this narration in Shu’abul Iman with slight variation in the wording.

(Shu’abul Iman: 2189)

However, I have not come across a version of this narration which adds Surah Fatihah and the first five verses.
