Is copying in Exam a Sin?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by IslamicSolutions.org

Question:

Is copying in Exam a Sin?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu `alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

An examination is meant to test whether you know your work or not. Copying will defeat the purpose of the examination.

Copying in an examination is deception. The Shariah condemns deception. [i]

Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihis Salam) says that one who deceives is not from amongst us.[ii]

Deception is a sin. The Kafara (compensation) for this is that you should regret this sin and never repeat the sin in future.

And Allah knows best.
