Take an oath only if you are speaking the truth

Question

What is the authenticity of this Hadith?

لا تحلفوا بآبائكم ولا بأمهاتكم ولا بالأنداد ولا تحلفوا إلا بالله ولا تحلفوا بالله إلا وأنتم صادقون

 

Answer

Imam Abu Dawud (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 3243)

 

Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic.

(Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 4357)

 

Translation

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Do not take oaths using your father’s name or your mothers or by the names of [idols]. Only take oaths by using Allah’s name and only take an oath using Allah’s name when you are speaking the truth.”

In addition to ensuring to be truthful when taking oaths, one should never take oaths on Allah’s name for trivial matters, as well as for pure worldly gain, even while being truthful.
