Which Sahabi stopped Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was on his way to kill Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

When Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was on his way to kill Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) , which Sahabi stopped him on the way:

Sayyiduna Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas or Sayyiduna An-Nahham, Nu’aym ibn ‘Abdillah (radiyallahu ‘anhuma)?

The reason for posing this question is that in some books, like Fadail A’mal and the Jamiat’s Tasheel Series Grade 7, it says Sayyidina Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radiyallahu ‘anhu). And then in books like Siratul Mustafa, Siratun Nabi, and the Jamiat’s Tasheel Series Grade 5, it says Sayyidina Nu’aym (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

Is it possible that it’s two different narrations?

Answer

‘Allamah Ibn Bashkuwal and Hafiz Sibt ibnul ‘Ajami (rahimahumallah) have clearly opined that the Sahabi in question was Sayyiduna Nu’aym ibn ‘Abdillah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). Many other ‘Ulama have alluded to this as well.

After having validated this position, ‘Allamah Zurqani (rahimahullah) has added that it is possible this Sahabi could have been Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (radiyallahu ‘anhu). This is the opinion of other Muhaddithun as well.

(Sharhuz Zurqani ‘Alal Mawahib, vol. 2 pg. 5; Also see: Tabaqat Ibn Sa’d, vol. 3 pg. 248, Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 4 pg. 59, Dalailun Nubuwwah of Imam Bayhaqi, vol. 2 pgs. 215-222, Sifatus Safwah, vol. 1 pgs. 101-103, Tarikhul Islam, vol. 1 pgs. 569-575, Al-Matalibul ‘Aliyah, Hadith: 4230, ‘Umdatul Qari, Hadith: 3867, and Tarikhul Khulafa, pgs. 210-211)

‘Allamah Zurqani (rahimahullah) has also mentioned that it is possible both Sayyiduna Nu’aym and Sayyiduna Sa’d (radiyallahu ‘anhuma), together, halted Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) and then informed him about his sister.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
