Your parents are your means of entering Jannah or Jahannam

Question

What is the authenticity of this Hadith?

Regarding rights of parents Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “They are either your [means of entering] Jannah or your [means of entering] Jahannam.”

Answer

Imam Ibn Majah (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that a man asked, “O Messenger of Allah! What rights do parents enjoy over their children?” He replied, ‘They are [your means of entering] Jannah or Jahannam.’

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 3662)

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) explained that their rights are that you are dutiful and obedient towards them. This will be a cause of entering Jannah. Disobedience towards them will be a cause of entering Jahannam.

(Mirqat, Hadith: 4941)

‘Allamah Busiri (rahimahullah) has declared the chain weak.

(Zawaid Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1247)

The Hadith is suitable to quote to show the importance of obedience to parents as is the rule with Hadiths of this nature.

Furthermore, this subject matter does have support from other narrations.
