Recite durud when you pass by a Masjid

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

When you pass by a Masjid then recite durud:

عن علي ابن ابي طالب قال اذا مررتم بالمساجد فصلوا علي النبي صلي الله عليه و سلم

Is this narration authentic?

Answer

Imam Isma’il Al-Qadi (rahimahullah) has recorded this as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu’anhu) -as it appears in the text you provided- with a very weak chain.

(Fadailus Salat ‘alan Nabi, Hadith: 80)

However, this could be allowed for practice as it is widely cited by senior Hadith masters in their books as a recommended practice.

Among these Hadith masters are: ‘Allamah Sakhawi, ‘Allamah Qastallani and ‘Allamah Ibn Hajar Al-Haytami (rahimahumullah).

(Al-Qawlul Badi, pg.379, Masalikul hunafa, pg.300 and Ad-Durrul Mandud, pg.158)

Note: My Honourable Teacher; Al-‘Allamatul Muhaddith, Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) has proven the eligibility of practicing on certain very weak Hadiths in his detailed treatise on the status of weak narrations entitled: Hukmul ‘amali bil Hadithid da’if. You may refer to it for more details.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
