The rewards for the actions of Hajj

Is the following narration authentic?

Answer

Imam Bazzar (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration. Imam Bazzar (rahimahullah) says, ‘This Hadith has been recorded with several chains, I do not know of a better chain than this one.’

‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) has declared this chain reliable. ‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) states, ‘The narrators of Bazzar have been declared credible.’

(Musnad Bazzar; Kashful Astar, Hadith: 1082, Targhib, vol. 2 pg. 177, Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 3 pg. 274/275)

Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah) has also recorded a similar narration.

(Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, 1887)

Translation

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “I was once with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) in the Masjid at Mina, when two men; one from the Ansar and one from the tribe of Thaqif came. After greeting Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), they said: ‘O Rasulullah! We came to ask you some questions.’ Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied: ‘If you wish, I can inform you what you came to ask or if you wish, you may ask.’ They said, ‘O Rasulullah, Tell us’.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied: ‘You have come to inquire as to what shall be the reward for him who has left his home to perform Hajj, and as to what will be the reward for two rak’ahs after tawaf, the reward there is for Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, for your wuquf [stay] in ‘Arafah, for pelting stones at the jamarah, for the sacrifice of animals, for shaving your head, and the reward for the Tawafuz Ziyarah of Ka’bah.’

They replied: ‘We take an oath by Him, who had sent you as a Messenger, we came to ask you these exact questions.’

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then said: ‘When you leave home intending Hajj, for every stride your camel takes, a good deed is written down for you and one sin is forgiven. The reward for the rak’ahs after tawaf shall be as you have freed one Arab slave. The reward for Sa’i between Safa and Marwah is like that of freeing seventy slaves. As for your stay in ‘Arafah, Allah Ta’ala’s [Mercy] descends to the lower Heaven, and He boasts to the Angels saying, ‘My slaves have come to me, dishevelled hair, coming from every corner, seeking My Jannah, if your sins are as numerous as the grains of sand or drops of rain or as much as the foam of the ocean, I have forgiven them all. O My servants, go forth while you are forgiven as well as those whom you intercede on behalf of.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) further said: ‘As for stoning the jamarah, for every stone that you throw, one such sin that would have destroyed you is pardoned [a major sin]. The reward for sacrificing an animal is stored by your Rabb. When shaving your head, for each hair, you will receive one good deed and one sin is wiped off. After all this when you perform the Tawafuz Ziyarah, you do so in the condition that not a single sin remains upon you. An angel places his hand on the back between your shoulder blades and says, ‘Now you may recommence your deeds, all your previous sins are forgiven.”

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
