Why would the Quraysh fast on ‘Aashura?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

One narration indicates that the Mushrikin used to fast on ‘Aashura as well.

Is there any history/reason behind their fasting on this day ?

Answer

‘Allamah Qurtubi (rahimahullah) states that it is possible that they (the Quraysh) believed this to be part of the teaching of Nabi Ibrahim and Nabi Isma’il (‘alayhimas salam), since they always claimed to be followers of the creed of these two Ambiya (‘alayhimas salam).
