What is the authenticity of the following Hadith which is often found in Sufi texts?
Takhalluqu bi-akhlaq Allah
Translation: Adopt the character of Allah Ta’ala.
Answer
This Hadih has been cited -with no chain- by Imam Ghazali (rahimahullah) in his book: ‘Al-Maqsadul Asna’.
The closest narration I could find is recorded by Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) in which Allah Ta’ala says:
‘I am Allah, there is no deity besides me, the Most Merciful. I have created more than three hundred and ten characteristics; whoever brings any one of them in addition to testimony in La ilaha illallah, shall enter Jannah’
(Al-Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 1093)
Declared sound (hasan) by ‘Allamah Zabidi (rahimahullah).
