‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) chooses to eat simple food

I am looking for the incident with the reference that once Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) invited Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) to eat of his meals. ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was eating dry bread and olive oil and others present were eating tharid.

Answer

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration. The incident is as follows:

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) says, “I once passed by a group of people who were eating tharid (a special type of food) and meat. ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) called me to partake of his meal. He was eating coarse bread and oil. I said, ‘You prevented me from eating tharid with the people and you called me to eat this?’ Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, ‘I called you to partake of my meal, and that food is for the [rest of] the Muslims.’”

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 33590)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
