Authenticity of the Hadith regarding Nabi’s (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) advice to a woman to dress modestly

Please verify the authenticity of the following Hadith which you have answered here:

Sayyiduna Usamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) says, “Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) once gifted me a thick cotton garment [which was made in Egypt] which Sayyiduna Dihyah Al Kalbi (radiyallahu ‘anhu) had gifted him. I gifted it to my wife.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then asked me, ‘Why aren’t you wearing the garment’? I replied, ‘O Rasulullah! I gave it to my wife to wear.’ Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) told me, ‘Order her to wear an undergarment as well [when wearing it] for I fear that the size of her bone structure be visible.”

Answer

Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) and other Muhaddithun have recorded this Hadith.

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 5 pg. 205)

‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) states, ”Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Aqil appears in the chain, his narrations are sound, whilst he does have slight weakness, and the rest of the narrators are reliable’ (فيه عبد الله بن محمد بن عقيل، وحديثه حسن وفيه ضعف، وبقية رجاله ثقات).

‘Allamah Diyaud Din Al Maqdisi (rahimahullah) has also deemed the narration reliable.

(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 5 pg. 137, Al Ahadithul Mukhtarah, Hadith: 1365- 1366. Also see: Al Matalibul ‘Aliyah, Hadith: 2225)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
