Locating a narration in Musnad Ahmad

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Kindly help in locating a Hadith from Musnad Ahmad and Tabarani, the understood meaning of the Hadith is that whenever Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) used to deliver the khutba, when he reached near the Mimbar, he used to first greet (assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatahu) the people and then start the khutbah.

Answer

I could not locate this in Musnad Ahmad or in Tabarani. Neither have the ‘Ulama of the past who have discussed this issue mentioned such a narration from these two sources.

However, there is a narration reported by the son; Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhu) that states that Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would make salam to those who were seated near the mimbar…

(Al-Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 6673)

Imams Ibn Hibban, Ibn ‘Adiy and others have cited a weak narrator in the chain.

(Talkhisul Habir, vol.2 pg.63 and Majma’uz Zawaid, vol.2 pg.184)

My Honourable Teacher; Al-‘Allamatul Muhaddith, Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) has also dismissed this narration as weak and unsuitable.

(Footnotes on Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 5238)

Notes:

1. This narration does not state that Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhu) would do this.

2. This narration does not appear in Musnad Ahmad.

3. Mention of Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) doing so has been reported in another unreliable narration in Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 5238.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
