Is this Hadith reliable?
عن معقل بن يسار، قال قلت يا رسول الله إني لآخذ العنز لأذبحها فأرحمها، قال وإن رحمتها رحمك الله
Answer
Imams Hakim and Tabarani (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith with a weak chain.
(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 3 pg. 587, Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 466, vol. 20. Refer: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 4 pg. 33)
However, the Hadith in question is well corroborated and suitable to quote. See a corroborating narration here.
Translation
Sayyiduna Ma’qil ibn Yasar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) relates, I said, “O Rasulullah! Sometimes I take a goat to slaughter and then have mercy.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘If you show mercy to it, Allah will show mercy to you.’”
