The heart hardens due to abundance of sins

ما جفت الدموع إلا لقساوة القلوب وما قست القلوب إلا لكثرة الذنوب وما كثرت الذنوب إلا من كثرة العيوب

Answer:

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as the statement of Yahya ibn Mu’adh Ar Razi (rahimahullah). [Approximate demise: 258 AH]

(Shu’abul Iman: 6828)

Translation

Tears dry up due to hardness of the heart, the heart becomes hard due to abundance of sins and abundance of sins are due to many faults/defects.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
