Reward for giving animals drink and treating them with kindness

I am looking for the Hadith

‘وإن لنا في البهائم أجرا’

Can you please cite the full narration?

Answer

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. The full Hadith is as follows:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Once a man was walking when he became parched. He went down a well, drank and came out to find a dog panting, which had been driven by thirst to eating mud. He said, ‘This dog has reached the same state as I was in.’ So he filled his leather sock [with water] and holding it in his mouth, climbed back up and let the dog drink.  Allah Ta’ala appreciated this deed and forgave him.” [One version in Sahih Bukhari has the words, ‘Allah Ta’ala appreciated this and granted him entry into Jannah’]

“[The Sahabah said] O Rasulullah! Is there reward on account of  [showing kindness] to animals?” He said, “There is reward for serving everything with a wet liver [i.e. every creature]

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 173-2363-6009, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2244)
