What happened to the property that Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) left in Makkah before Hijrah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

What is the explanation of the following Hadith?

Wa hal taraka lana Aqil min ribain wa duwarin.

Answer

Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) was explaining that after leaving Makkah [for the Hijrah] Sayyiduna ‘Ali’s (radiyallahu’anhu) brother, ‘Aqil ib  Abi Talib -who was not a muslim then- had taken over their properties and sold them off. Therefore Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) had no property left in Makkah to reside in when he returned.

The other versions in Sahih Muslim [as well as Sahih Bukhari] also clarify this.

This was the bad habit of the non believers in Makkah; they would take over the properties of the Muslims who migrated to Madinah Munawwarah and do as they wished with those properties.

(Sharhun Nawawi, Hadith: 3281-3283 and Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1588)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
