Are man made theories appropriate to use as therapy?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by FatwaCentre.org
Question

Can a person use man made theories to help heal traumas or use them as tools for therapy? A friend recommended- https://hooponoponomiracle.com/iloveyou-imsorry-pleaseforgiveme-thankyou-mantra/

Is it discrediting to Allah to use this type of spirituality despite how helpful it is claimed to be. Are these ideas limited because they exclude the acknowledgement of Allah?

Answer

These mantras must be avoided.

Saying “I love you,” “I am sorry,” “Please forgive me,” and “Thank you” independently to yourself is not necessarily prohibited. If one feels stronger in consoling themselves like this, this is not impermissible.

However, there are two major issues with reciting these mantras, together, in this form. Firstly, it is prohibited to imitate or follow the prescriptions of another religious tradition. The Ho‘oponopono prayers are closely associated with the indigenous animism of Hawaii. These statements, pronounced together, are prayers in their religion which yields a specific benefit. Muslims are not permitted to recite these, just as they are not permitted to recite Christian hymns.

Second, your question states that this mantra claims specific benefit? What are these benefits? If you are seeking the positivity, then it is more than likely that consoling yourself with the above statements will reassure someone, raising their self-esteem and self-confidence. Nonetheless, we fall into the first problem – we are following prescriptions from another faith tradition. Furthermore, the words of this Ho’oponopono prayer are ascribed with efficacy. Because of this, these statements can have a detrimental impact on one’s faith. The website you’ve linked states:

These simple phrases have tremendous power. They contain the power of repentance, forgiveness, transmutation, and gratitude, to erase and transmute any limiting memories or beliefs. You can use the four steps to solve any problem, and it’s not necessary to know the cause of the problem or to know what the exact problem is. You can say these four sentences as much as you like. The more you repeat them, and the more you clean, the better.

This system of belief ascribes efficacy to these words as having special healing powers. In fact, I have heard Joe Vitale, a major promoter of this mantra, state clearly that these words can solve health, relationship, family and financial problems. This is extremely problematic. Ascribing efficacy to any being other than Allah is shirk. We believe as Muslims that there is no power or might except from Allah. Everything that takes place does so according to Allah’s will. This is an essential aspect of our creed as Muslims.

This is akin to the prohibition of visiting fortune-tellers or reading horoscopes. This is not because they yield predictive abilities, but should one visit a fortune-teller and their prediction finds a slight amount of truth, it can shake their faith. If it does not shake one’s faith, one might have a small question in the back of their head that the fortune teller seems to have had some truth in matters of the future. This is all problematic for one’s faith and as such, we have been prohibited from visiting fortune-tellers.

Based on these two major contentions, one must avoid these mantras. They are based on the religious prescriptions of another faith tradition and can be extremely damaging to one’s faith in Allah and his will.

Lastly, we understand Islam to be a faith that encompasses every aspect of one’s life. Islam has a clear system of transcending the materiality of this world and finding contentment with the remembrance of Allah. This is Tassawuf – seek out a sheikh and begin this journey to self-actualisation and drawing near to Allah. True contentment will not be found in any other religious or new-age discourse.
