Onychomycosis and Wudhu

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Respected Mufti Sahib,

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

A person suffers from Onychomycosis (a fungal infection of the toenails or fingernails which causes fingernails or toenails to thicken, discolour, disfigure, and split.). It initially started with the small toe, but is gradually moving onto all the other toes. Although it is bearable, it is really uncomfortable.Likewise, there is fear of it spreading more. A reliable Muslim doctor has said that the only cure is to cover the nail with a thick wax, and change it every seven days. The problem is that water cannot penetrate this wax. Will it be permissible for this person to apply the wax and make masah over it, or what other alternatives will he have?

Jazakallahu khairan,

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Since the treatment is based on medical grounds, it is permissible for to undertake this wax treatment.

He should wash the area that is exposed and make Masah over the area that is covered with wax.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best

Wassalaam,

Ismail Moosa (Mufti)
