Touching the Name of Allah Without Wudhu

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Assalâmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullâhi wa barakâtuh respected Muftî.

Is it allowed to touch the word “Allâh” (in Arabic as well as in Latin letters) without wudu?

I own a misbaha where “Allâh” is written on it with Arabic letters, is it allowed for me to touch/use it even if I am not in wudu? (Is it in itself allowed to use such a misbaha where the Name of Allâh is written on it? Wouldn’t it be disrespectful to use it?)

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Although in essence it is permissible to touch name of Allah Ta’ala wihout wudhu, it would be a sign of taqwa and love for Allah Ta’ala to honour His name. Allah Ta’ala mentions,

( وَمَنْ يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنْ تَقْوَى الْقُلُوبِ ) [سورة الحج: 32]

“Whoever honours the signs of Allah, then it is from the piety of his heart.”
(Al-Haj, 32)

Thus, although it is permissible, it is disrepectful and hence better to touch the name of Allah with utmost respect.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
