Hating a Sinner

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Assalaamu Alaikum Mufti sahab,

Since we are supposed to love and hate only for the sake of Allah, but not to hate the sinners. Then who is a believer supposed to hate? Is it wrong to hate those infidels invading Muslim lands purely for the sake of Allah? Please explain.

Jazakallahu khairan

Answer

Wa ‘alaykum as-Salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

It is permissible to hate those who openly violate and disobey the commandments of Allāh Ta’ālā. A person should hate those infidels who invade Muslim lands purely for the sake of Allāh Ta’ālā.

However, this hatred should not become an impediment in a person praying for those he hate, nor should he stop the prophetic task of amr bil ma’rūf wan nahy ‘anil munkar (commanding good and forbidding evil), if it is in his capability.
