Thinking Bad Things While not Fully Concious

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

I was sleeping. All of a sudden I became a little bit concious( not fully concious) And was thinking of a line which I am thinking was wrong. Then I automatically went to sleep without any concious When I woke up I couldn’t even remember what I exactly said but as much as I could remember I think it was something bad which didn’t make any grammatical sense and went against Allah What should I do How can I seek forgiveness ! What to say exactly

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salām wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

Allāh says:

“Allāh does not charge a soul except (with that which is in) its capacity.” [Al-Qur’ān 2:286]

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allāh has accepted my invocation to forgive that which is whispered in the hearts of my followers, unless they act upon it or utter it.” [Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Bukhārī]

Based on the above, one will not be held responsible for evil and negative thoughts as long as they were not materialised practically or verbally.

However, if these thoughts were contradictory to the fundamental beliefs of a Muslim, then one should turn to Allāh in repentance and to renew one’s Imān (faith) by verbally attesting to the article of faith whilst at the same time holding the correct beliefs.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
