Is my name permissible?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Is the name Evie permissible ? I’m not able to change it at the moment but if it’s not, then I’d like to shorten it somehow or do something to make it permissible.

I also would like to know if the name adia is permissible.

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

From our research, we found that Evie is from Hungarian origin, and it means: ‘One who is elegant and beautiful’.  Alternatively, it could be from Hebrew and refer to life and breathing.

Whilst these meanings are good, we should realise that a name says a lot about the identity of a person.  By having a name such as this, people might not realise from your name that you are a Muslim. Hence, it is better to change the name.

If there is difficulty in changing the name, maybe add a second name with this name.

The name Adia/Aadiya/Aadiyya is fine. It means: “The treasure of  Allah.”

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best

Wassalaam,

Ismail Moosa (Mufti)
