Obeying Father-in-Law

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Amjad Rasheed

Is it obligatory to obey the father of one’s husband? What rights do a man’s parents have on his wife?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

The husband’s father is not the same as the husband with respect to obedience, so it is not obligatory for the wife to obey her husband’s father. However, it is best for the wife to do her utmost in being good to his parents and striving to gain their favor as much as she is able in order to honor her husband and preserve a good relationship with them.
